Linux issue
I've just been experimenting with using Idea under Linux. It mostly works
pretty well but there is one problem that drives me bonkers and I was
wondering if it happens to other people or it's just something wierd that's
only happening to me.
Often when I close a dialog I loose the focus in Idea. I can click and
things but there is no carret and I can't type. I'm using KDE 3.2 under
debian. I can fix the problem by switching desktops. Anyone else get this?
Actually I lied... there is another thing that bugs me but it is not really
Idea's fault.
KDE seems to globally take over a bunch of standard keys. For example
ctrl-f1->f10 are used to switch desktops so I find myself constantly
switching desktops by mistake. I tried reassigning these using kcontrol but
the changes don't seem to take.

Glen

There seems to be a number of focus related issues under linux -- which according to JetBrain folks are really a JVM issue, not IDEA's.
And if you can't remap the shortcuts under KDE, then that's probably a KDE problem. I could remap the gnome default bindings without any problem. Well, if you really can't change KDE bindings, try changing IDEA bindings instead.
I'm really sorry. I know this is cruel and mean but I've been dying to do this for so long...
IT WORKS ON OSX!!
IDEA runs better on OSX than on linux Muhahaha!
OK, I realise that isn't really true, but just indulge me.
You cruel evil man. I may just have to break down one day and get myself a
Mac. I'll be watching very carefully to see how long it takes them to get
1.5 out on the Mac.
The Linux issue is annoying enough that I'll probably go crawling back to
Windows for the moment. Every time I've tried Linux I've had
disappointments but the disappointments get smaller each time.

Glen

After paying triple the price for the hardware, I would crack like Hani too. Unfortunately I'll have to stick with cheapo self-assembled PC's for quite some time.
I have seen what you mentioned also happen in GNOME. The cursor disappears, which is resolved by minimizing and restoring the application window. It's not too annoying because it happens so infrequently (maybe once every three days, and I use it 8 hours/day).
If the focus annoys you in KDE, then be sure not to try Fluxbox. One guy in my office uses Fluxbox and his modal dialogs often popup in the background, frequently causing him to wonder why IDEA seems hung. With GNOME 2.2, the problem used to be that a modal dialog would popup but not have the focus. It annoyed me so I switched to KDE, which annoyed me even more because of its instability so I switched back to GNOME. The focus issues seem to have been resolved in GNOME 2.4.2.
As for the key bindings, I was able to remap them when I was using KDE. You are saying that in kcontrol you went to Regional & Accessiblity -> Keyboard Shortcuts and reassigned the keys, but if you go back in there your changes have reverted back? Sounds to me like a KDE bug.
Also, since you are running Linux, I have to ask if you are using CVS. If you are, how is the CVS performance for you? I don't want to divert the topic of this thread to that, but please make a comment on this thread: http://www.intellij.net/forums/thread.jsp?forum=13&thread=77870 if you use CVS under Linux.

So it works on 1.5 beta1 ?
It was happening a lot more frequently for me under KDE. Maybe I should
give Gnome a shot. I'll try 1.5 beta (as suggested in another post) and see
how that goes first.
I haven't really had any problems with CVS. I'm using external ssh2 and it
seems to be working well. I haven't tried it with a large repository
though.

Not quite perfect for me. For starts, you will probably want to disable window animations -- they're somewhat sluggish under 1.5 for some reason. You'll also get some mysterious exceptions about cyclic dispatch now and then, and some null pointers inside swing classes -- DON'T report them to JetBrains, remember you're running the application under an (still) unsupported environment.

Strange... I just tried 1.5 and I can't open the editor. You didn't have to do anything special?
