Load/stress testing tools

What do folks recommend for good tools that can do load/stress testing
of a web application and specifically open source or free tools. I've
tried JMeter and it didn't do the job as it's recorder just wasn't able
to capture properly and it was flaky in other ways. What other good ones
are there that have a proxy server for recording playback scripts and
that hopefully allow a stress test to be orchestrated from multiple test
machines?

Thanks,
Jon

- IBM use to have "performace tool" on alphawork. It is command line and not
very scriptable but generates awfull lot of stress and pretty reliable
(except problems with SSL) I do not see it any more - probably they made it
commercial

- www.opensta.org nice but a little bit strange and not always works

- Microsoft Application Center Test pretty dumb but does the job we use it
now

Couple more, I have not tied them lately but a year ago I was not very
impressed

I've used Microsoft's Web Application Stress Tool in the past and I remember
finding it decent enough. It's free, it does record while you browse, can
coordonate multiple test machines. And it's quite well integrated with
perfmon.

Give it a try if you're on windows.
