I (as well as someone else I saw in this newsgroup) got that when
installing the clearcase plugin. Without clearcase everything worked
fine. Do you have any custom plugin installed? In that case try removing it.

I've deleted everything in the plugins directory but still get the same error. Presumably, I'll need to reinstall an old eap version, update the settings there and then reinstall this version...

I get the exact same error. I do not have (nor have I ever had, as far as I
know) the clearcase plugin installed.
I've tried both running the installshield and just dropping the zip and jre
into place. I've also tried removing the cache and config directories. But,
no matter what I do, it crashes in the same manner.

I reinstalled 876 and that worked fine. I reinstalled 887 and that now seems to be fine, too.
