Best IDEA Plugin...

Are there any contenders for the "Best IDEA Plugin?" I may try to work in a
quick blurb about it into the IDEA 4.0 Overview, but this will have to be
cleared by those above me. However, in the meantime, I'd like to get this
info (if there is a clear cut winner), and write something about it (the
blurb will appear in the Open API section, if it appears at all).

So, place your votes / ideas in this thread... I'll be reading.

Inspection Gadgets, by far the most complete plugin out there, a huge
amount of efforts went into it. As a matter of fact, I think JetBrains
ought to buy it from David (I think that's who wrote it) and incorporate
it officially in the product.

I agree. I use a lot of plugins, but Inspection Gadgets is one of the
things that just lifts Intellij IDEA from the IDE crowd.

Dear David,

No matter how many times I download my own plugins, Dave Griffith's Inspection Gadgets plugin (not to mention his Intention Power Pack plugin) has a higher download count, according to the Plugin Manager.

This either means that his plugins are more useful, his marketing department has a larger budget, or that he knows how to write a faster download loop than I do. Probably all are true. (After all, he would have used the IG plugin to find the inefficiencies with his loop! All I can do is make my code look pretty with the Tabifier and Rearranger.)

One could say, based on the nature of our plugins, that I am merely a man of form, but he is a man of substance. I mean, my plugins merely change the form or readability of the program; his reduce bugs and actually make a difference in its performance!

Therefore, I urge your consideration of his IG plugin. I see no reason to consider either of mine, despite the presence of explicit, lurid sex scenes accessible on the About box through the secret "Easter Egg" keystroke, available only to those who download both of my plugins between now and Monday.

TIC,
-Dave

No, sorry, I meant Intention Power Pack.

Aw, shucks.

As for JetBrains purchasing InspectionGadgets (or IntentionPowerPack) from me, I'll just reiterate my standing offer to give all rights away to both of these to JetBrains free-for-nothing if they wish to include them in IDEA. All source for both plugins is public domain, no rights reserved.

Since whatever shreds of modesty I possess forbid me from casting my vote here for IG or IPP, I'll put in a split vote for the JUnitTest and Workspaces plug-ins. Both cram lots of functionality into a very easy-to-use interface, both fit beautifully into my day-to-day workflow, and both strive to just "Feel like IDEA" (which is about the highest compliment I can give). Unit test creation/navigation and named file sets are functionalities that the core product would highly benefit from, and these plugins provide solid implementations and great visions of how they should work.

Crud, forgot about Rearranger. Make that a three way split, and repeat all the nice things I said.

The download counters kept showing IPP as higher than IG, for reasons I just don't understand, since IG covers about %80 of the IPP functionality and does it better (i.e. error markings, F2, yellow-box). Honestly, I've been tempted to gut most of IPP, and just tell people to use IG. Is there that crying of a need for DeMorgan's law and convert-to-hexidecimal intentions?

Me too, it is a very good addition to the original inspections.

We should all thank JetBrains that they have such an open platform to allow
this kind of plug-in.

First choice: Inspection Gadgets plugin
Second choice: SQL Query Plugin !

Hi Dave,

I've never tried IG, because I rather want intentions than inspections
to transform some boolean expressions. Are such things in IG also
available as intentions?

I also like the CodeOutline plugin (haven't even thought before, that
such thing can be useful) and the TabSwitch plugin as long as it was
bound to Ctrl-Tab.

Most of the intentions for conversions of booleans are available as inspections in IG. The only ones that aren't are those that don't really count as coding problems. For instance, "convert || -> &&" (and vice versa) are only available in IPP, while simplifying boolean equalities (converting "foo != false" to "foo"), is available in both. The payoffs with using IG instead of IPP for this are that constructs like these get highlighted in your editor, as well as being searchable via the batch inspection tool. If I was designing IPP from a blank slate, it wouldn't include anything better done in IG.

Speaking of IG,

how come 992 still gets confused about the available/installed version of IG
in the plug-in manager?

Ok I'm going to toot my own horn, with the hopes no one will jump on me
for it, but the JBoss plugin seems to have gotten 200 downloads, and
that's not counting those we get at the SourceForge site. I'm actually
surprised that many people use it, because I seldom get a bug report on
it. Either people try and dump it, or they try and it works, or they try
and futs with it and just don't feel like reporting bugs. :)

Ok, so to make this a bit easier, list the top 3 (in no particular
order).... I will write a section with the top 3 plugins (or the people who
wrote it might help me), and I'll submit it for consideration ...

Thanks for the feedback thus far...

Workspaces
Rearranger
InspectionGadgets (I'm not that modest, especially with the new version being packed for shipping).

It's the only plugin I used in all EAP builds and never caused problem (I do have problem with CtrlShiftI to move line up but that's because the hot key is consumed by the OS). I wonder if someone has submited a feature request so that IDEA will implement it instead of relying on the plugin.

Top three that I use most of the time:
- tabifier
- psi viewer
- line up/down mover

There are others I use and have a lot of respect for, but I'll have to log in as a guest to vote again for those. :)
