706 is the latest 3.0 build. If you're having trouble with build 706 you have two choices:
1. Use the latest 800 build (currently 896) which is feature incomplete pre-alpha software. Don't let my label fool you though - the IntelliJ EAP releases are generally pretty good, but sometimes there may be features that you need that are missing and there are definitely still bugs.
2. Go back to a previous version of 3.0 (I've never upgraded from 3.0.1, build 693 myself). Of course, I'm not sure how to go about finding an older version.

The build is almost unusable: a memory hog and frequently garbage collects. Please advise. Is there an update to this build ?
Could you please give a detailed description of the problem? Your project size, IDEA jvm settings. When saying "frequently" - how often in seconds (minutes)? What tasks that you do in IDEA cause the problem? Otherwise it is almost impossible to give you a meaningful advice or investigate the behaviour.

As i can say, i use 706 for a long time on very old computer - PIII 500 256MB, it works fast&fine, no bugs i can see... The some time gc run, but it normal for JVM. So if you have more memory on computer and you not like GC - then turn it off :)
