Performance & memory consumption
I tested PHPStorm releases 4, 5 and 6 on a quad core q6600 4GO RAM and a good asus motherboard.
It's by very very far the slowest php editor i have ever seen also by being the one that consums the most of memory.
It's so dramatic that i can't understand how all of you manage to make it usable; for me it's clearly unsuable; even just opening the menus is extremely painful.

You forgot to include your test data and scenarios, as well as list of contestants and the results.
I need the steps to produce what you want but it won't be necessary because nothing is loaded, nothing is created, the software is just launched and nothing has yet been asked.
It's just extremely slow to launch, memory used is enormous, and then the application behavior is near like an unresponsible app.
With this situation under an up to date (tried 2 windows xp and one seven on different computers), i don't even try to do something like test data and scenarios...
You should post some facts.
How much memory? How is the cpu usage, when it's idling?
On my xp maschine, i have a memory consumption for about ~140 MB and zero cpu usage.

I use PHPStorm on my laptop, wich has i3 CPU and 3 Gb memory and it uses about 200 Mb (Win7 64).
I don't see any problem with that, this is an IDE, not just a PHP editor. And I have no issues regarding the performance, except of debugging( wich is sometimes very slow even on more powerful machines)

Except debugging, is phpstorm really responsive on your computer ?
On my Q6600 4go, i feel it as an heavy java desktop app. It's less reactive than php ide based on eclipse which were the heaviest php ide i tested before phpstorm.
Yes, I have no complaints regarding its performance.
Maybe that means your i3 is a lot more powerful than the Q6600.That can be useul as a reference.
Is it a sandy bridge ? ivy bridge ?

I don't know, maybe weaker processors don't run PHPStorm very well, I haven't worked on ones, but no-one who I know has ever complained about performance, though on some machines (like netbooks) it looked buggy. But still better than Zend Studio
Zend studio works better on mine. I will buy a recent computer and test again then
Maybe you guys create a help page for performance tips. What are the best settings for fast loading, less stuttering and low memory usage in phpstorm. Maybe some OS settings(that you know) could help to improve this, too.
