Ugly fonts

I'm on Ubuntu 9.04 and running java 6. The fonts are displaying as they are suppose to, but I have very limited selection of fonts to pick from -- RubyMine is not picking up the fonts installed on the system. NetBeans is picking them up so I know they are there, and I have done as this font tip instructed...
