Coming from eclipse of course, the navigator is something I live in. I work on multiple open projects (often the same code with different version trees). Multiple windows is super awkward for this.
Usually we suggest to join different Eclipse projects as modules of the single IDEA project. Since your different projects are the same code VCS branches, this is really not a solution. Is your VCS Git? We support switching between Git branches (checkout) in-place, in the same window.
Git yes, switching no. I typically am looking at both at once, so switching is awkward even though it's fast. And at times I've got the things running.
