tabs & splits
Dear EAPers,
We are currently doing some facelift for editor tabs, so it would be
great if you give us some feedback for what you are unhappy with or
willing to see in Diana. Ideas and feedbacks of any scale are accepted,
from "want to have a close button right on each tab" to "want to drag
editors outside the IDEA's frame".

Hi Kirill,
Some points that came to my mind as I was playing with the new tabs:
The tab that is under the mouse cursor and will be activated by a left click should be somehow distinguishable from all others - maybe paint it in a lighter blue than the one that has the focus (mouse over effect).
The active tab should be more prominent when in unfocused state: When I change to the project tool window the current editor tab looses all its color and looks like all the other tabs. OK it stands out a bit, but I would like it to be more visible.
Don't add a close button or if you add it also add an option to disable it. I'm using a 3-button mouse and don't need the added clutter. For people working with a 2-button mouse a close button would probably be nice. So as an option it would be great.
Sorting tabs by drag and drop would be nice.
Some kind of filter to temporarily hide editors for files/classes not in the same package as the current file/class or to hide all files/classes the current class/file does not reference.
Double clicking on a tab should maximize the editor of the tab like it does in IDEA 7.
When splitting the editor area horizontally, I'd like to have an option to have the tabs of the bottom editor at the bottom instead of at the top, producing the following effect:
(Oh, this looks a bit strange and I don't know how to tell this forum that this part is preformated. So let's say it's code. It still doesn't look good, but you should get the idea.)
Cheers,
Robert

I am sorry, and I can not express clear in English, please take a look at the attachment. Maybe editor thumbnail layout just like IE 7.0, and it is very cool.

Have had my request in for a while: Editor Groups(or you can call them File Tab Groups).
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-12130
Being able to move float a source file and move it to a second monitor
would be nice.
A single, simple action to move a file to a new tab group.
Currently this feels just wrong and takes too much clicks.
Almost always when I open another tab group I want to compare two different files.
Right now to do that I split one file and then close the original tab.
I would be happy if the existing action "Move to opposite tab group" were
available even if there currently is no other tab group. If invoked it
could create a new vertical split.
A close button only on mouse over would be nice. I used to have the
middle button mapped to double click, so could not use middle mouse button
to close a tab. (If tab closing is available, I might try the "middle
button is double click" configuration again.)

- moving/re-sorting of tabs
- detaching tabs also free to move them out of IntelliJ IDEA' frame
very nice new L&F and functionality !!

Please add tabs scrolling with mouse wheel (as in firefox).
Also i'm not sure the LaF of new tabs looks better than native or those from Alloy, and i think this kind of job should be done by professional designers.
I would like an option to keep the tabs sorted alphabetically. Some way for the tabs to take up less space would be good also. Maybe the labels could be shortened if they exceed some amout of characters.
Also I would hate to have a close button on the tabs.
Bas
The blue bar under the tabs - what's it supposed to be for?
It's sitting there taking up space not doing anything, is it just eye candy? If so, an option to turn it off would be nice.
I did wonder the same thing.
However please don't add another option - jst remove it.

Coming up on it's first anniversary as Open/Unresolved.
Hi Kirill,
As a Mac user, I appreciate the new tabs a lot, since it stops the annoying behavior of half the tabs being hidden by the standard Mac L&F.
However, if we're tackling tabs, one thing I really dislike about the current implementation with multiple rows of tabs is that when you switch to a tab in the top row, the rows jump around to make that the bottom tab row. I know a lot of tab implementations do that, but I find it disorienting to have my tabs jumping around, and I have to spend a lot of effort trying to find an open tab that used to be someplace else.
If instead, it is possible to keep the rows in place, and just highlight the tab in the top row, that would be a lot better IMO.
Kind regards,
Maarten
btw, I love the new look for the tabs. Much more pleasing and easier to
read and find the currently focused tab.
I haven't seen anyone ask for this, but I'd like an option to make all of
the editor tabs the same width. I find in Firefox, etc., when the tabs all
have the same width, it's much easier to scan for what I want. Whereas in
IDEA, since the width of each tab depends on the file name, it's really
difficult to scan the list for the file I want.
A definite +1 for being able to have multiple floating editors!

Krill,
Thanks for allowing us the opportunity to provide some input/feedback. My thoughts...
1. Fix the editor tab placement option (http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEADEV-25760) so tabs can be placed on side. (This would be a huge loss for me if this functionality was removed.)
2. Allow for the font size (and maybe even the font) used in the editor tabs to be set separately from the default font in the Appearance settings. I would love to be able to use a smaller font for the names in the tabs.
3. I would like to see a configurable option to limit the tab size. Ideally, the user could configure the maximum width, and if it is on/off (i.e. full width or limited width). It would be nice if it was easily toggled on/off via an icon on the tab bar group (regardless if tabs are on top/bottom or on the left/right) without the needing to go into settings. Toggle the option on and tabs never exceed a certain width. The tab for SomeCrazySuperLongClassName would show as: "]]> SomeCrazySu..." as appropriate. But the full file name would show as a tool tip upon hovering. (The current tooltip showing the fully qualified path would fulfill this function).
I place my tabs on the right; I find it a better mental model when organizing my open files to have the tabs stacked. I know this is more unusual, but I suspect there are a fair number of users who do such. What would be totally awesome is if the following option was available: For left or right placement of tabs, the tabs display in fixed width. But when hovered over, they "slide" out -- like an undocked tool window does now -- to expose the full names. This allows for the best of both worlds. If you guys implemented that, I'd ship you all a case of beer :) I don't think there is a corresponding concept for top or bottom tab placement. But you guys are great at coming up with things, so who knows.
4. Make the behavior of the TabReorder plug-in standard behavior, along with the "Drag to reorder" option suggested above
5. I think that any tab closing icon should either be configurable so it can be turned off. (Wasted space for us three button mouse people.) While only having it show when hovered over is an option, I tend to hate that in other programs I use since I have many time gone to activate a tab, only to accidentally click on the close icon that appeared at the last moment under my mouse pointer. So instead of activating the tab, I closed it - very frustrating. Ideally, there could be three options for a close icon: always show; show when hovering, never show.
I thought of one more thing...
6. The ability to left justify names in the tabs. This would be useful when having the tabs on the left or right of the editor.
