The new find-bar

Hi,

I like the idea of the find bar that looks like the one in Firefox. It's a nice feature.
One thing I don't like about it is how it totally ignores the current look and feel. It has always that ugly gray gradient in the background. Please at least use the window background color of the look and feel as the base of the gradient if it has to be a gradient at all. And the text field should be a text field and not some gray area with a line border.

Cheers,
Robert

P.S.: I'm on a Windows XP machine here. So I'm used to some ugliness, but the Mac users will probably have a nervous breakdown when they see it ;)

I would say: download it and find out.

I just downloaded 7291 and Erik should be happy because now ENTER + SHIFT+ENTER work as Find Next and Find Previous when the search box has the focus.

I filed some more Jiras for some of the other issues. The biggest is IDEA's non-standard CTRLF CTRLF behavior.

Search->Find : CTRLF CTRLF should restart last find, not popup the recent searches menu
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-15131

Search->Find: Give Option to display find bar at the bottom of the Editor pane instead of the top.
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-15133

Search->Find: should BEEP when no matches in file and when Find Next reaches EOF (or Find Previous reaches SOF)
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-15134

The bottom line for me is that this new unified find bar unfortunately takes more keystrokes to do the same thing as I did before with the Old Incremental Search. The Old Incremental Search doesn't have this issue with the focus being in a search box or in the Editor. So please please, restore the old Incremental Search.. and I recommend you do not remap anyone's keymapping for the Old Incremental Search to this new Search->Find thing.

Other->Incremental Search is bound to the new inline find bar Search->Find

I opened one about a week ago, for keeping the Find Bar open, instead of this its here one minute and gone the next bouncing around.

http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEABKL-5260

Of course, it is already been put into backlog purgatory. Hopefully, if they look into the option of allowing you to put the Find Bar at the bottom of the Editor pane, it might resurrect giving us the option of making it persistent.

Hm... This is interesting, because I have almost the exact opposite thought!
I'm coming from the perspective of the old Incremental Find which was inline inside the Editor pane. It would show the text you were searching for in a little box at the top of the Editor window. When you broke out of the incremental search, the little box went away. It was completely transient.

Now this new find panel sticks around if you don't hit ESCAPE. For example, you press CTRL+F , type some text, and then instead of hitting ESCAPE, you use the mouse to set the insertion point in the Editor, then the find panel remains.

Personally, I think if the search box loses focus, then the panel should go bye bye.

Another way it can stick around is if you start a search with CTRL+F, and then click on another tab, etc. I think that when you click on a Tab, if there was a residual find panel still there, it should be removed before displaying the tab.

Looks like I just found another reason to keep using the Old Incremental Search!

I am used to editor like UltraEdit, and I like having the Find Bar persistent, across all tabs.

If it is just going to come and go, then I would rather go back to the old clunky find popup; it be like the find from IE6. But, if I have my choice, I like to configure the different applications I use to be as consistent as possible, from tool button placement to short cut keys(I changed UEs duplicate line to Ctrl-D).

As for increment search, I have no problem with that and not sure why the behavior was changed.

Again, something like this would be optional, and possibly, expanded to a 3 options: current functionality, persistent across all file tabs, and transient(goes away as soon as it loses focus).

Hi Alex,

Usually, is doesn't take me a change in IntelliJ to make me happy, but this change might. As long as it doesn't frustrate, it's better than before. I've just downloaded 7291, and I'll try it out (and let you know).

However, even without trying it out yet, I'm still a big fan of bringing the old search UI back. Opinions about the new search are still varing a lot, while everybody was pleased with the old one.

Well, like I said: I'll let you know.

Alex et al,

I wanted to give some feedback about the new Search, but I cannot, since CVS support is broken in the new release. I cannot add files anymore (I get stacktraces all over the place, like this (see below).

So probably I won't have any feedback until the next release.

PS: After this error, IntelliJ won't even let me shutdown anymore...

Not everyone was pleased with the old UI, at least for the old find popup. :)

I prefer the old find UI and think the new search is a loss in functionality. I didn't realize this was a "new feature" and spent a bunch of time trying to get rid of it. Find All is missing, which is something I found very useful. I really just find this new search frustrating.

Find bar looks nicer now, but I saw no improvement on supporting the
keyboard behavior of incremental search.

I HATE this new UI. Can we have an option to use the old one, please?

When using split editor windows, if I'm editing in one window, then click in another and do a Ctrl-F to search, the new Find Bar appears at the top, but doesn't get focus, so anything I type or paste gets inserted into the editor wherever the cursor is, instead of going into the Find Bar.

This probably won't happen very often, but when it does, it's incredibly annoying.

Dave,

Did you submit a Jira? I'll add a vote to it.

Interestingly, this does not happen if it is the same file open in the two panes (I will sometimes do that if I need to simultaneously be working on two parts of the same file; it eliminates a lot of scrolling).

Thanks

Sorry about the delay - IDEA-15298

Hi, I have the same problem, but it was closed because of a 'could not reproduce', even though I put all the steps to reproduce the problem in the issue.

This was my issue: http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-15145

0

Yes, unfortunately it doesn't seem to be consistent. I just tried it again having reloaded IDEA and it is now working.

0

Same here. I reproduced it yesterday, but can't today. Maybe it only happens on Wednesdays ;)

I added some comments to your tracker Dave. Hopefully someone can determine the exact sequence of events needed to consistently reproduce this. It would be annoying enough as originally reported; but it is even more annoying when intermittent since you can't just get use to it as an issue and get in the habit of hitting ctrl-F twice when using split panes.

Wow, amazing. Here it's "fixed" too, without upgrading/changing anything....

Weird!!!
