Develop with Pleasure

Is there a small feature missing from IDEA that would make your life happier, would make you sing IDEA's "Develop with Pleasure" motto? Please use this thread to highlight that missing feature or two in the issue database so we can all take a look & vote, especially long-standing features that were overlooked and risk being overlooked forever.

Thanks,
Jon

Hmm, I thought about mentioning IDEADEV-17070
(http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEADEV-17070) here too, b/c it
requires me to always do a text-find after "find usages" but it seems
to get addressed in "Selena Final" (hopefully...).

regards,

Messi

The sample for the issue would be great. I've just tried import
directive in include with the usage in including jsp and everything
looks OK.

Hmm, I already said in the original discussion that this could be
difficult, I thought it was reproducable since it was set to "fix in
Selena final", but I'll try to strip down a "publishable" case.

kind regards,

Messi

And more VC related problems:

http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEADEV-11693

IDEA-13757 in particular is very annoying, I used to get it a lot but it happened for the first time in a while this morning.

Hi all,

Dmitry, as I promised, I filed a few issues that I'd like to see addressed in a next EAP :

http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-13727 : Deprecated classes/interfaces in find usage should be strikethroughed
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-13760 : Update Project Info : Add CTRL+ and CTRL- shortcuts and equivalent buttons
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-13761 : Update Project Info : Add a "group by module" button
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-13762 : Clearcase : The Use UCM model option should work at the module level, not project
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-13765 : Add an option (button) to hide the canonical methods
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-13766 : Add the ability to paste some path from clipboard in the "Select Path" dialog
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-13767 : Make "Right Margin" specific for each file type

Feel free to vote for any of them ;)

Just to let you know i filed a new request :

http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-13782 : Colors & Fonts : An an option to configure own method calls color

You may want to vote for it :)

We have some static methods in our project with quite long type definitions.
It would be nice if they could be colored differently. See

Hello,

I filed 3 new usability requests :

http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-13784 : Find Usage : add an option to group by production code and test code
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-13786 : Call Hierarchy : add an option to group by production code and test code
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-13787 : Call Hierarchy : add an option to group by module

Thank you.

I know it is a small thing, but I(and a few others) have been wanting this for years.

Already updated several of my comment templates to use this. Now, if you could just fix that issue where we can no longer create(or edit) live templates that start with a /, at least without having to edit the XML files.

Thanks again. The small things do count.

When I do "override default fonts" everything works fine except the font in javadoc window which
remains too small to be readable. IMHO "override default fonts" should affect javadocs. This issue
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEABKL-215 seems to be related thought I don't mind creating a
new one.

Wow, this is a big thread. In any case, I'd like to contribute something.

This is a feature I would very much like, it can't be that complicated:

http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-13519

In short, IDEA can build an entire EAR from scratch, except if your project contains custom taglibs. You can set up a module to build them, actually, but the taglibs won't be detected by IDEA when developing so the JSP's will be full of errors. Very annoying.

Added this one too :

And the Sun approach is even worse. They use a combination of tabs and

Well, I think weblogic 10 integration does not risk being overlooked forever, but I think that keeping it out of the Selena release is an error: http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-12242

I can't suggest IDEA as standard development environment for our company primarily for this reason, at this moment.

The missing feature I'd really like to see is a spell checker for comments that really works.

At one point there was a spell checker pluggin, but it never really worked well. I am not even sure still works at all now. Its problem, like the new Eclipse feature (which checks spelling as you type comments showing mistakes just compile errors) is that the dictionary look up doesn't do a reasonable job offering suggestion. This is key to this futures success.

ant support is such a very basic feature and it is in
such a bad shape, especially since the big
refactoring that seems to have taken place in Idea a
while ago.

I agree: ant matters, and I gave up long ago hoping that idea's ant support is finally improved.

But there definitely IS a single feature that would improve the "develop with pleasure" experience: how comes one can't turn off inspection warnings or errors (colored lines) for idea builds as we can do in java files?

At least when ant inspections go wrong (which they to often) we could turn off the inspection!

IDEA's renaming and moving / relocating transformations alter whitespace adjacent to the tokens they directly affect. This bugs me a great deal, 'cause I put a lot of effort into getting my code laid out the way I like it.

CTLRSHIFTLEFT or +RIGHT don't stop at right-hand word boundaries. They should.

Double clicking in white space does not select the white space, it selects a construct large enough to enclose what's on either side of the white space. That's never what I want.

Randall,

Can you point us to an existing JIRA issue or create one?

Jon

For me, there are several of these annoyances, and they do strike me with varying frequency. It might take a while to catalog them all.

Should I produce a single JIRA entry listing them all, or one of each? If it's the latter, I'm reluctant because I haven't gotten a very good reception to my editing- and formatting-related requests so far and if I'm just whistling in the wind, I'd rather not spend the time.

I may be mistaken, but I don't think that weblogic 10 integration made it into the EAP builds, yet: I am still unable to start the server or deploy an application, apparently.

Imports and refactorings: http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-14336

- Accepting an import (via ALT+ENTER) for unqualified class name
regenerates some or all imports already present.

- Accepting offered imports when pasting code fragments regenerates the
pasted code, altering the whitespace therein.

- Applying a renaming refactoring alters whitespace surrounding all
references of the renamed entity.

Generic white-space issues: http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-14335

- Adding JavaDoc comments alters whitespace above the newly added
comment.

- Typing newline within a JavaDoc comment applies fixed indent equal to
the that of the start of the comment plus one space rather than the
prevailing indent of the line on which the cursor was present even
when "Enable JavaDoc formatting" is disabled.

- Double-click in whitespace does not select the whitespace, rather it
selects the construct (in the CTRL+W expanding selection sense) that
encompasses whatever is on both sides of the clicked whitespace.

- CTRL+W when the insertion point is in white space expands the
selection immediately to a construct much larger than that whitespace
itself. The first stage of CTRL+W selection expansion when the
insertion point is in whitespace should be the whitespace itself.

- SHIFT+Click inside an existing selection always yields an insertion
point upon either moving or releasing the mouse. It should instead move
the temporally trailing selection end-point while leaving the initial
selection endpoint unchanged. I.e., it should "reopen" the selection as
if it were still being initially created.

- CTRLRightArrow and CTRLLeftArrow (with or without SHIFT+) stop at
all boundaries except the right-hand side of a word. The right-hand
side of a word should be included in the boundaries at which the
CTRL+Arrow keys stop.

For all these reports where code modification by IDEA doesn't result in the code-styling you want, I have a stupid question: Why don't your change the code-style settings to match what you want? I say it's a stupid question because the answer is probably that you can't achieve your desired code-styling with the currently available settings.

- Accepting an import (via ALT+ENTER) for unqualified
class name
regenerates some or all imports already present.

I suspect that the Alt-Enter to import functionality may have an implicit Optimize Imports. Unless I am misunderstanding what you mean by "regenerates".

- Accepting offered imports when pasting code
fragments regenerates the
pasted code, altering the whitespace therein.

- Applying a renaming refactoring alters whitespace
surrounding all
references of the renamed entity.

All code modifications done by IDEA implicitly do a Reformat Code.

- Typing newline within a JavaDoc comment applies
fixed indent equal to
the that of the start of the comment plus one space
rather than the
prevailing indent of the line on which the cursor was
present even
when "Enable JavaDoc formatting" is disabled.

That does sound like a bug to me. Although, bear in mind that indentation in Javadoc comments doesn't mean anything for the generated Javadoc HTML. Still, I think you're right.

- Double-click in whitespace does not select the
whitespace, rather it
selects the construct (in the CTRL+W expanding
selection sense) that
encompasses whatever is on both sides of the clicked
whitespace.

- CTRL+W when the insertion point is in white space
expands the
selection immediately to a construct much larger than
that whitespace
itself. The first stage of CTRL+W selection expansion
when the
insertion point is in whitespace should be the
whitespace itself.

This is a matter of opinion and should be made an option if implemented.

- SHIFT+Click inside an existing selection always
yields an insertion
point upon either moving or releasing the mouse. It
should instead move
the temporally trailing selection end-point while
leaving the initial
selection endpoint unchanged. I.e., it should
"reopen" the selection as
if it were still being initially created.

Looks like a bug. It does move the selection end-point but it immediately cancels the selection afterwards.

- CTRLRightArrow and CTRLLeftArrow (with or without
SHIFT+) stop at
all boundaries except the right-hand side of a word.
The right-hand
side of a word should be included in the boundaries
at which the
CTRL+Arrow keys stop.

This is also a matter of opinion. If implemented, it should be an option, since I know it would bug me greatly if it were the standard behaviour.
