That 6.5 release

What should they put to Idea home page in case they don't make any new
features?
We have fixed 2000 bugs? :)

I wouldn't mind at all if devs would fix and polish 6.0, I'm pretty sure
they don't mind as well, but frankly, it's quite unrealistic.

In various threads there is discussion going on about the upcoming 6.5 release.

Although it is good to read that Jetbrains will continue to add new features to IDEA I am also a bit hesitant to be enthusiastic about it.

There are still a LOT of outstanding bugs in 6.0 that affect usabillity. Things that really annoy people, sit in the way of being productive, things that still don't work after 2 point releases and things that are half finished. Just look at this forum as to what kind of things people are reporting or the outstanding bugs in JIRA.

I'm not sure whether I can affect Jetbrains roadmap at all of course but hopefully they will listen to a customer who says: please finish the 6.0 release first to get back that level of quality that the 4.x and 5.x released had instead of adding more NEW things to it.

I have to agree. This has not been one of my favourite releases.

I have a request for Jetbrains. If you cannot get the error highlighting in the browser/file tabs to work properly, can we at least have the option of turning it off? I have class files here, thay contain no errors, but have been highlighted on the tabs for weeks (sometimes the browser highlights them as well, sometimes it doesnt').

One thing about the speed though. I have noticed that a lot of corporates install virus scanners on office machines, and these seem to really slow down a lot of application startups, not just IntelliJ

Are you saying that is it unrealistic to get back that level of quality that the 4.x and 5.x released had?

As for me, I don't see any evidence that the quality of 6.0.2 is lower than
that of 5.1.2 or 4.5.4. Sure, the functionality which is new in 6.x still
has some bugs. The stuff which was new in 5.1.2 or 4.5.4 had bugs, too, which
were fixed in subsequent releases. Many of the bugs that were fixed in 6.0.2
were present in all 5.x or sometimes even 4.x releases. Also, there are certain
long-standing problems which were present in earlier releases and still present
in 6.x.

But from what I can see, the quality of core functionality, of features directly
related to editing Java code, is definitely better in 6.x than in 5.x or 4.x.

Things are promising in this regard - there seems to be a recent change, a commitment to focus on quality and performance. It is a step in the right direction. It is incumbent on us all to supply specific issue feedback on performance, quality, & usability and see where this goes.

I don't know. Maybe I'm a pessimistic, but I have the feeling that the overall quality of the product is lower in recent releases.

I remember using IDEA 4.5 (the last "really good" release for me), and that was a joy. Sure, it wasn't anywhere near as sophisticated as 6.0. Web integration had just started, and we had little more than jsp highlighting, without any error checking. We had fewer features, but the features we had worked great, without any major problems, and the thing was smokin' fast.

Now fast forward to IDEA 6.0. We got a lot of new features, and IDEA is probably a lot more useful and productive than it was before. The fact that I (and many others) kept upgrading shows that. But I have to admit, it has lost it's polish from the earlier days. The good features make up for it, but I find many really annoying bugs and half baked features on 6.0, the kind of thing I wouldn't see before.

Don't get me wrong. I'm still a rabid IDEA fan, and a happy JetBrains customer, but I have to agree with the OP here :(

Just to balance my own previous post, Jon is right here too. While IDEA 6.0 isn't at the same quality level as 4.5, I could feel a renewed commitment to quality on performance near the end of the EAP cycle. And that's why I really hope that JetBrains keeps focusing on that for a while, before starting to push a new feature release.

I think Marcus Brito expressed my opinions better than I did with my Hope Not comment.
I recall 4.5 being the last really good release for me as well for the reasons he states.

I recognize that making a mature better and better must get harder and harder, but I stand with Marcus Brito sentiments;

I might agree, but for the bug where a rename picks up comments that have been excluded. That something like that slipped through in the second point release is decidedly worrying...

This parti?ular issue is a very recent regression (I think it was introduced
in 6.0.2).

I like the 6.0 release and yes I think 6.0.3 which is in EAP should have been the way 6.0 should have been released in the first place. If you look at some blogs on the usage of 6.0 people were complaining about it being too heavy or too slow and running out of memory etc etc. I am using 6.0.2 right now and none of those issues have happened to me so far. But yeah it definitely gives me the feeling that this release was a bit hurried out the door. The only thing I hope the devs at Intellij do is keep churning out point releases for 6.0.x even though they start full development on 6.5.

When I come across this problem, I normally find that simply closing the tab and reopening it solves the problem. (CTRL-F4, CTRL-E, Enter - three keystrokes!).

Do you recall the 3.0 release ?
It was a wreck for 8 months, and continually crashed.

I'll have to credit to JetBrains for cutting out a number of
features proposed for 6.0. Even though I would have liked
better JSP support.
