alt vs hotkeys

is there any way to completely shut off the alt -> focus jumps to menu bar feature? i know it's a
windows thing, but sometimes i don't get the hotkeys pressed correctly, end up in the menu bar and have to esc my way back to the editor panel.
this seems to be keyboard dependent (don't have that problem at home), but switching off the alt-jump would fix it.
