OT: Mac mini enough for Java development?
Hi,
We are thinking about purchasing a Mac mini, but have our doubts,
whether it can be used for serious Java developing. At least the
built-in 256MB RAM seem like a joke to me. Is somebody using a Mac mini
with IDEA? Is it acceptable fast?

This update does not change the default version of Java on your Mac from
Java 1.4.2 to J2SE 5.0, though Java applications that require J2SE 5.0
may specifically request it. If you want to change the default Java
version for applications and applets, use the new Java Preferences
utility that is installed by the J2SE 5.0 update at
/Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/.

OK, now I've got my Mac mini :]
But since I did not find a way to access newsgroups, I need to post from
Windows. Maybe somebody can answer me following questions:
- Does Mac OS support multiple users, e.g., administrator and normal
users?
- Is there a "default" place where to install software (e.g. IDEA)?
- Is there something like a Norton Commander available for Mac OS?
- How to configure the Email-client to leave the messages on the server.

I didn't.
Use Thunderbird. I find it much better than Mail.app for standard mail,
and it works fine with newsgroups. And it's cross-platform.
It lacks full OS integration, though, like access to the Address Book.
MS-Entourage has the same problem.

The first user account you create has more rights - *1 - than the next
ones, so it's better to create a second account for your daily work.
*1: don't ask me which ones; I don't know.
I suggest you create
~/Applications
, so you won't "pollute" your HD.
Not really what you want, but for quickly locating and launching apps,
install Launchbar. It's invaluable.

hehe... not sure... what about Norton Commander do you like? Maybe that
will give us a clue as to what might do the same thing.
Preference|Accounts|Choose account| Clicked advanced tab.
Generally everything you can tweak is under App Name (upper left corner)
Preferences. Command + Q always quits the app. Clicking the red button
just closes a window, but does not quit the app.

By the way, I've found www.macosxhints.com to be an invaluable source of
info, especially when encountering problems. Check the forums, chances are
somebody else has already had the same issue.

One more thing: I hate the way MacOS places applications' menus on the
top of the main screen.
So, the first thing I do after downloading a new IDEA build and doing
the dance of joy, is changing
apple.laf.useScreenMenuBar
to true, in
IntelliJ IDEA-buil.app/Contents/Info.plist
(Select the app, right-click, "Show Package Contents".
I wonder who, on this list, share this habit of mines.

AFAIK MidnightCommander (http://www.ibiblio.org/mc/) runs on every
possible Unix, so it should run on MacOSX too.

and I prefer the Window's way, especially when working with 2 screens.

Anyway, I change the default value, to have the menu attached to the app
window. I really find the Apple way counter-productive.

+1, plus everything else on the mac is this way, so changing that is a
bit weird, you still have the menu bar no matter what, so it's not like
you're saving space, you're actually losing some.

You wouldn't need it if Mac keyboard support was not inferior to
Windows' kbd support. With ANY windows' app, Alt-F will open the File
menu, and from there, you can do anything with the keyboard. With MacOS,
you need to reach for your mouse first. That's why PowerBooks are such a
great developement platform: you don't have to reach for the mouse, you
just have to move your thumb an inch.
Finally, with 2 screens, I hate it when the app is on the right screen,
and its menu is on the left. nothing could make me love this. Except a
lobotomy. Maybe.

Do you know, whether there is a binary available somewhere? At this stage of
my Mac experience, I don't want to mess around with compiling it myself,
especially, when the mentioned website says, that it is tricky.

Where IDEA stores its settings on Mac OS X? At least it does not store
them in ]]>/.IntelliJIdea like in Windows (where for gods sake is the
tilde sign on that ApplePro keyboard...).

If you go to Apple Menu->System Preferences->International->Input Menu
you can enable a "Keyboard Viewer". Once enabled, you can select it
from the flag menu at the right-hand side of the menu bar.
It will show the keyboard layout in its normal state and then modify it
when you press shift, option, command, etc. Keys that have an extra
highlight around them are combined with the next key to give accented
characters, e.g. alt-e + e gives é. You have discovered the tilde as an
accent, like mañana (alt-n + n). There is probably an easier way to
type it if you just want the tilde!
This used to be a standalone app, I don't know why they hid it away like
this :(

I am running IDEA on OS X on a PowerBook (1Ghz G4 with 1 Gig Ram and a 4200 RPM disk drive). This is more than enough horsepower to develop with IDEA.
You can get reasonably priced 3rd party RAM for the Mac Mini. Raising the memory to 512Meg or even 1 Gig would be a good idea.
And if you dare you can get 2Gig dimms now, though none have been
'approved' for use on that hardware... perhaps soon they will.
