Split windows go to back / forward question

Hi all,
  In split vertical windows, the go back / forward through history seems a bit buggy.  Specifically, if I click from the left window to the right window, and do a go back in the right window, a new tab in the right window with the contents of the open tab on the left window gets pulled in, instead of the old history in the right window.  Is this supposed to be the case?
