So far the only way (as far as I know) is to delete growl.jar from the lib directory under the application bundle.
Why do you want to disable them?
Because they are annoying. I had hoped you guys would figure that we, developers who site behind IDEA most of the day, find that we like to configure/disable anything that blinks or pops up. Remember that little annoying envelope of JetConnect? Same thing. It distracts. And it adds nothing.
It's a cute novelty for about 5 minutes, then after you've been working on a unit test and you change->compile->run, change->compile->run, change->compile->run a few times, it's just becomes silly.
"Yeah thanks IDEA I know it compiled - the test wouldn't be running otherwise would it!"
Perhaps it's appropriate for long-running background operations but not in this use case.
You can also use the system preference for Growl and uncheck the enable button for IntelliJ. This is the standard way to enable/disable Growl notifications on a per application basis. Worked for me.
I welcome this feature as it shows that IntelliJ is no longer just a Windows IDE and is taking advantages of some of the Mac features to improve the user experience.
On a practical note I find it particularly useful when it tells me how many files were checked in into SubVersion.
As one of the other users mentioned you can disable the notifications from within Growl itself.

yes I agree that better Mac OS X support is a welcome thing.
And yes there are certain situations where the Growl notifications are useful, but I find them annoying in the situation I described above.
However I found that even disabling them in Growl's options and the restarting IDEA means they come back! So it only lasts for the session :(
Perhaps IDEA should provide its own Growl options?
