Twice almost. My current job and my last job purchased them for me when I said I was going to use IJ even if I had to buy it myself.

lucky you. In my experience most purchase managers would see that as a nice gesture on your part to save the company some money (or there would be sysadmins who instigated policies making installation of "non-approved" software a firing offense, and often impossible).

if you can't install anything on your system because access is physically disabled (I've worked in environments where they pulled the cables from CD and floppy drives before glueing the cases shut and prevented downloading anything except from the intranet) that won't help you.

Perhaps you should look for a change in employer. I work in a high security environment and it's not that draconian here. Next they will give you a magnet and tell you to start flipping it over to generate your 0's and 1's.

I purchased a personal licence of IDEA 3 way back in the day when doing
independant contracting - but these days work pays.

If I ever went back to contracting/consulting I'd be looking at getting
a new license (but then I'd probably also be looking at licenses of
jira, confluence, and other things as well).

If I was in the position that I couldn't afford IDEA - NetBeans 6 is
looking to be the main winner as a replacement.

No reply, because I am generally lazy.

But, I bought it for myself, though I am still on the 5.1 license(nothing in 6 excited me enough to upgrade). Where I work we are a WSAD shop. I played with different IDEs and settled on IEDA. As with some other software I use, I literally went against the corporate grain and went my own direction.

I do have a license for Omnicore Code Guide, but I never fully switched over, because they were missing a few creature comforts that I like in IDEA; and it looks like Code Guide and X-Develop are not longer being developed.

But, I will be evaluating Netbeans 6, to see what it has to offer; I just installed the current alpha, but have not had time to start it up yet(spent the morning fighting with the EAP, so I might give it whirl tonight).

I have no problem putting my money into a product that I thinks gives me value and makes my work easier. And, I can be loyal, but that loyalty is not free or unending; I can and have switched products for various reasons(I switched from Globalscape to Rhinosoft for my FTP needs).

I asked my boss to buy it and said yes. In the end he never bought it for me. So now Im buying it -_-
