Starting from this build IDEA is bundled with its own JRE. No modification to startup scripts is neccesary.
but WHY? Cant we at least get an alternative download without the bundled JRE? I am on a rather slow line, and already have half a dozen JDKs on my machine. This really decreases my motivation to download.

I agree: please keep on providing a "core"
download with no JRE and no installer.
Most java developers already have the latest
SDK and don't like, trust or need installers.
For me, "Upgrade with pleasure" means
- download a small zip or tar[.gz|.bz2]
- untar to /opt/ideaXXX
- replace the config dir with my own
Christian,
You may try a bit smaller files:

Huh?? Let me repeat my question:
what do I need to download for Linux? The .sfx link from your previous
mail, or one of the links from the site? Is .sfx an executable installer?
Sfx is self-extracting archive.
You can select whatever you want: installer (.bin file), tgz, or .sfx (the
smallest one).
