how to disable local history?

I have disabled local history in the settings, but idea still writes enormous amount off data into the system/vcs directory, seemingly never deleting old stuff...

is there a way to keep it from taking so much of my disk space, or am I misunderstanding something?

I am a bit confused by this. I noticed, as the original poster noted, that even with Local History turned off IDEA writes out all the RCS files. Turning on Local History to prevent this seems to be rather non-intuative. Is there a way to completely disable local history and not have anything written out at all?

I am using the Perforce VCS plugin so I am not sure if that forces IDEA to also use the local history.
