Maybe I don't understand you, but how does it increase your
productivity? Could you please post a (small-sized) screenshot?

I think it not good spend of memory of JVM... IDEA work fast, and i think

Sorry, but i'm dislike any "slow" application.

I think it's a sexy idea (the fact that MSN Messenger allows me to put a T3 skeleton image on the background puts it way before ICQ in my eyes). It does slow down the application but one has to know what he's doing.
If after setting the background picture IDEA is still working fast enough - why not ? It's like setting the Windows wallaper - I know I waste my memory with it but that's what I can leave with.

Of course, if you decide to consider it - this could be the configuration option, turned off be default.

P.S.
Btw, you'll have to deal with dynamic resizing of the image. MSN does it pretty nice but I don't think it's an easy thing to do. How does JEdit complete it ?

Koev, if you'll open a request for it - I'll drop my votes :)

The only functional value I can find in this feature would come if the
background image is dynamically chosen based on the file properties
(type, name pattern, vcs status, etc...).
I can imagine using different images for test code, fragile code,
slow_to_optimize code, etc......

This tagifying can be done with 'todo's, but a background that would
jump in your face would be more visible, obviously. But it would'nt be
searchable, as are the 'todo's.

You have got to be kidding! Like I want this instead of web modules. I am
searching for your IP address, so I can send a massive EMP to obliterate
your computer.

Is it some weird kind of humour ?
Did you drink something ?

could this be done via a plugin? Maybe if you beg a little in the plugin forum someone will have pity of on you and write it. I would at least try it out.

No. He spent the night watching the hourglass, after launching, on 996,
a jUnit test suite.
He's still staring at the screen. And he can't blink. And he can't drink
either.
I feel his pain.

I don't know, and I don't feel an urge big enough to investigate.

If somebody does, I guess he should start with :
EditorFactory.getInstance().addEditorFactoryListener(... );

An simpler option, that I would surely use, would be to change the
editor background colour.
It could be either static (based on file properties : name regexp, file
suffix, etc..),
or dynamic :
failing test => light pink
contains a "todo" or "fixme" => pale blue
etc..

At first I thought that it is the stupidest IDEA I have seen here.... :)

But after a moment of thought - if I could just disable it, it would be nice.

And we could say - eclipse does'n have it :)

It's not because you could disable it that it make it useful !
Though Alain gave an interesting idea with a background depending on passing
of tests, or things like that.
That's a nice visual clue. We need visual clue.
But honestly, the image background is definetely useless :(

And we could say - eclipse does'n have it :)

That's a humourous reason, but not really a valid one

Guys, I think you're missing the point talking about "usefullnes" and "productivity". From a practical perspective this feature is useless, indeed. It doesn't make me more productive and was never intended to.

But the idea isn't about being more productive, it just about pleasure, as simple as that. Does your Windows/Linux wallpaper makes you more productive ? No, of course it doesn't but having a freaky wallpaper makes people feel better.

I'm still not sure whether having an image on the background of IDE will make me feel better. It probably will but thinking about it - it's still a good idea.

But like I said above - the dynamic image resizing is the main issue here. Nobody answered me how does JEdit do it - does it resize the image when the window is resized ?

I understand your point though.
But I'm not really sure it would bring me more pleasure.
For me, it'd annoy me and disturb me more than make me happy.
Visually, it's harder to read the code with a bg image.

Honestly, I'm not sure either, never tried it :) I'll have to look for a picture with white background ..

But that's the reason this feature could come as turned off by default.

That is apples vs oranges. M$ is trying to attract a different user base
that uses their product for a different reason. In addition, M$ has tons
more developers and money to throw at a product. With that in mind.
Limited resources == limited features, trim the fat and you are left with no
background image.

However, you can feel free to write a plugin that does that.

Good start. Just make it configurable, for me - based on CVS branch, or module :)
