Automatic update installation fails on Linux as root

DataGrip 2016.1.1 on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, installed in /usr/local with root ownership

Obviously it won't update as a regular user, so I attempt to run DataGrip and run the update process as root. However, this fails silently - after restarting DataGrip it is still the original version. I believe I had this problem with PyCharm too.
