IntelliJ is CONSTANTLY freezing on me - desktop or laptop ... doesn't matter
I've been using JetBrains products for over a decade. I've thoroughly familiarized myself with a variety of them, including PyCharm, PhpStorm, WebStorm, Android Studio, DataSpell & DataGrip, RubyMine, and CLion.
This year, I made the ridiculous decision to go back to school in pursuit of a doctorate in mathematics. Then I made the ever more ridiculous decision to take an advanced algorithm & analysis course - *thinking* it would be an easy few credits.
The class requires that everything is built in Java (one of those hardcore, "strongly typed, OOP languages are the best - end of story! Period! Exclamation mark! EOF!" sorts of atmospheres).
Ok - fine - whatever.
I took a few Java courses back when I was a kid in college, this should be no problem.
They also just happen to really push the use of Eclipse, an IDE I've never really gotten along with. So I thought to myself, “I'll use IntelliJ instead, being that it's a superior JB product, a company that has won my trust countless times over the past 15-some-odd years. Plus, I'll go be a JB missionary and convert everybody taking the course to IntelliJ!”
Whoops!
This frickin' IDE … *sigh*/*rubs temples* FREEZES … ALL … THE … TIME!
Doesn't matter if I'm running it on my laptop, on my desktop, on a lab computer … it just doesn't matter! I couldn't build a program specifically to freeze as much as this does (… ok, that's not true, I totally could - but you get my point).
It's the worst when I just go to close a project. IntelliJ just drops straight into an infinite “saving project” progress bar. I always end up having to kill -9 it's hung self.
I have never had issues like this with any other JB product. Never ever. Not ever. Not never neither!
I vouched for it so hard. I freakin' love JB. I adore them. But IntelliJ … man. It's like it's the problem child of the whole grip of JB products.
What I'm wondering here is, is it down for everyone or just me?
I'm not looking for any actual fixes at this point (though, that'd be nice). I'm just trying to get a feel for how prevalent an issue freezing is for IntelliJ. I may even have to just drop to the low, low level of using Eclipse.
But wow. I was selling it to my much younger classmates; telling everybody how much better JB products are and that IntelliJ is far superior to Eclipse.
Now? Now I can't seem to pry my feet from my mouth after they've both been securely force-wedged into the tight grip of my now dislocated jaw.

Hello Thomas!
I truly apologize for the experience you've had. I'm here to help and will gladly look into the issue to find a solution for you!
To get started, could you please zip the logs folder after you encounter the issue? You can find instructions on how to do that here: Locating IDE log files (https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/articles/207241085-Locating-IDE-log-files). This will help me check the recorded events and thread dumps.
Also, I wanted to share that there is a known issue on Linux systems, which you can read about here: YouTrack Issue (https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IJPL-74471). It might be helpful to try the suggested workaround.
Thank you for your cooperation!
It is happening to me as well. I am running Linux and finally decided to use the new UI. It is now freezing all the time, especially when it is saving settings whenever that is necessary. It will just hang there (not much CPU usage). I never encountered issues like that when I was using the old UI.
Just a comment confirming that Thomas is not the only one having freezing issues. I am also not going to bother looking into it too much. I will just wait until the fix is here. Not being helpful? No, I have too much stuff to do right now. Dealing with the freezing by killing the process is much easier for me at this point. So, if this is not the right attitude, I apologize. I just don't have the time to try to find out what is wrong with JetBrains IDEA. So, sorry.
Ha, I downgraded all the way to 2024.2.0.2 and it is much faster and not freezing. FYI.
Crossing my fingers that it does not degrade to freezing constantly for this version as well.
Khunyee,
You may try workaround from https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IJPL-74471 . It's pretty quick and don't need much time or efforts.
Thanks for the info. I will try it when I have a bit of time. This 2024.2.0.2 version works very well for me right now. No freezing for one hour now. And it compiles my build properly too (instead of hanging or slooooowly). Yes, the newest version has so many issues, it is astonishing. So, it is good for now.
Ok. IDEA 2024.2.0.2 froze a few minutes ago. In the middle of moving from one project window to another. Just frozen, no CPU activities, nothing. First time in hours of heavy editing. So, that is good? Anyhow, I decided to try this work around. I also updated to 2024.2.2 and see if the combination is good. I certainly hope it is.
I have to say, I have not lost any work yet. So that is definitely very good.
The pattern, for me, can't speak anybody else, is that it tends to freeze easily if I have more than one project opened at the same time. And when IDEA is trying to save something itself (not through my actions), like saving settings for a project.
Thanks for information! Please let me know if updating IDE and setting custom property helps.
Well, IDEA 2024.2.3, with the “workaround”, just froze on me. It says “Saving ‘XXX’ settings”, where “XXX” is the name of my project. This happened when I have at least two projects running. And only after quite a bit editing.
When I have only one project open, it does not freeze as easily.
I will try an eye on the sequence of steps to reproduce the symptom.
Fix is included in 2024.3 version. Could you please check if it's reproducible with 2024.3 EAP version: https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/nextversion/ ?
Excellent! I am installing 2024.3 EAP right now. Will let you know if it freezes, or hopefully, in a day or two if it does not freeze any more. I will keep my habit of opening multiple projects as usual to see how it goes.
Thanks! I'll be waiting for updates.
Yaroslav,
Thank you for the update and the link for the EAP build.
I just installed it. I will definitely let you know how it goes.
Also - thank you Khunyee for confirming the issue :) It's appreciated!
I have used the 2024.3 EAP IDEA for the whole day. Tons of editing, again with multiple projects opened. So far, no freezing at all. I also updated to 2024.2.3. Yeah, that version still has the freezing issue.
I will keep using the EAP. I will only post again if it freezes. If I don't post, it means it is good.
Thanks!
EAP 243.16718.32 Fedora 40 freezing alot. I even tried to apply “ide.ui.new.file.chooser=true” no improvement.
Hello Dusan,
Please create new request on YouTrack: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issues/IJPL attaching logs folder zipped (https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/articles/207241085-Locating-IDE-log-files) to check recorded events and threaddumps.
IJPL-163208 IntelliJ IDEA Freezes during normal development
Yaroslav Bedrov - just reporting back. I've been using the EAP since last week and I have yet to experience a freeze. Thank you!
Same experience as Thomas, no freezing at all since I started using the EAP (Build #IU-243.16718.32, built on September 26, 2024). I am eagerly waiting for it to be released (it has other issues, but quite minor, not impacting my work at all).
Thanks a lot for a feedback! Nice to hear that it works fine.
Just a nore. It froze for the first time this afternoon. I did have four projects opened. And it just froze. Probably not the same reason as before, as it was not saving the settings this time. But hey, whatever, I will report back if it freezes again.
Build #IU-243.19420.21, built on October 9, 2024
Just updated to the latest version 2024.3, running on Windows 11.
I never had an issue before. Now it freezes every time an IntelliSense popup comes up. It is not permanent, Rider doesn't crash, but I need to wait about 2 minutes every time.
Build #RD-243.21565.191, built on November 13, 2024
I have the same issue like Joanna now with 2024.3. This is the similar issue that Gemini plug-in issue I reported to Google which they fixed (and broke again). When I update TypeScript code, it freezes for about 1 minute, but it recovers. But in this state the IDE is not really usable. Prior to 2024.3 with Code Assist I did not encounter this issue.
I am on Build #IU-243.21565.193 running on a MacBook Pro OS 15.1.1., and for the last few months have also experienced freezes. Force quitting is needed. I cannot find any kind of pattern that causes this. I have tried to do the clear cache actions and that has not helped prevent this. I will pass my logs onto the issues channel.
I have the same bug whole year long! it is a global critical bug (not only for typescript), and it still present.
phpStorm freeze when the autocomplete pop up starts to open. And still not fixed.
Problem in 2024 - 2024.3, on fresh installed 2024.3 (243.21565.202) too, with or without additional extensions.
In macos Sonoma 14.1.- 14.7, macos Sequoia 15.1.1. It is impossible to work with phpstorm 2024.x
My Steps to Reproduce
The whole system freezes. I have to restart. The same bug for all 2024.x versions. (2023.x - is ok)
We need to check the thread dumps and logs to understand what was going on during the freeze, thanks.
My IDEA has been freezing for no reason lately (it can freeze even if it's open on a second screen and I'm only looking at it with one eye) up to 3 times a day.
I find it ironic to ask to collect logs. I. Every. Time. Send a report after another process kill. You must have a whole bunch of them there 😂
To be honest, at the beginning of the month I first thought: is it worth renewing the subscription if over the past six months there have been so many problems in my favorite IDE? (and it all started with a forced update to the new UI)
Sorry for my negativity. I hope everything will get better!
