PyCharm remote development not starting

PyCharm starts acting weird after I use the Pycharm remote for a couple of months (incorrectly removes newlines, doesn't allow me to type, wrong autocompletions). Then, I cannot connect to the server anymore because it is not responding. I tried to kill local processes on the server and start again. I also tried to delete the .cache/RemoteDev directory and deploy it again.

I connect using PyCharm → Remote Development → SSH

The error I get is the following:

The problem you encountered seems to be related to the lack of Dev Container plugin classes in the Gateway installation. Could you please update your Gateway to the latest available version, 2024.3.3?

Yes, I've just realized that my Gateway version called from PyCharm is older than the Gateway I have installed system-wide.

Dmitry Molodenskiy, do you use old PyCharm version? If so, is it possible for you to update?

In the logs you shared, I see that the IDE on the remote host (IDE backend) was shut down:

Ok, I have no clue what is going on, but today it all just works fine from the Gateway 2024.3.3 :-)

Just in case I uploaded the remote host log file, maybe you could find something useful in there.

Thank you for the update; glad the problem is gone.

In the backend logs you shared, I see suspicious entries related to the IDE directories paths, for example:

idea.system.path=/home/<username1>/.cache/JetBrains/PyCharm2025.1 -> /g/<username2>/JetBrains/PyCharm2025.1

Is there some network disk or the IDE distribution is used by several persons? It may be the reason for the problems you encountered.

that is right, I develop at remote HPC with the limited space at home directory, so I created a softlink to the network disk ~/.cache/JetBrains → /g/<username>/JetBrains with bigger disk capabilities. This disk is indeed used by many other people, but supposed to be fast. Do you think it will be more stable if I use /home instead? Is there some environment variable I can set to change the default path for .cache/JetBrains directory?

Yes, I'd suggest using it instead and downloading your IDE distribution (IDE backend) directly to your user home directory. If there are several users having access to the same IDE distribution files, it may disrupt the normal Remote Development flow and lead to unexpected results.
