New version of copilot code completion feature conflicts

已回答

IntelliJ IDEA 2024.3.4.1 (Ultimate Edition)

When I installed the new version, I found that copilot's complement function doesn't work properly, when I restarted it he could run normally for a while, but after a while it doesn't work, IDEA's own complement started working, in the previous version there was no this problem at all, what causes this?

Hi Sleet, GitHub Copilot is a third-party plugin, so this can present a conflict with the AI assistant; please try the following steps:

1.- Review the next article: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/articles/SUPPORT-A-866/JetBrains-AI-Assistant-code-completion-doesnt-work-if-GitHub-Copilot-is-installed and Verify if you see under "Settings | Editor | General | Inline completion" the mentioned message:

AI Assistant Code Completion is now disabled since the following plugins are enabled:

GitHub Copilot

To enable AI Assistant Code Completion, you will need to disable them first.

2. If you're using any of the versions mentioned in the article, please contact GitHub Copilot Support.

If none of the above steps fits your case, please follow the  below steps:

  1. Go to plugins, search for JetBrains AI Assistant, and disable it.
  2. Restart your IDE and verify that the JB AI Assistant is disabled and that the GitHub Copilot plugin is enabled.
  3. Test the completion and do a screen recorder (preferably), or take some screenshots at different points during the execution so we can see the behavior more clearly.

Also, the logs should be collected when the issue occurs. You can do it by going to the menu "Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data"; this will create a zip file.

Please upload the logs through https://uploads.jetbrains.com/ and share the UploadID and the plugin's versions.

I’m experiencing this conflict in IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2.3 after updating the GitHub Copilot plugin.

I disabled both Enable Copilot Completions and Enable Next Edit Suggestions (NES) in Copilot’s settings and restarted the IDE. However, JetBrains inline completion remains disabled because the Copilot plugin is still enabled.

Having to disable the entire plugin is quite impractical. I use Copilot for other capabilities too, particularly workflows involving MCP tools, which I haven’t been able to reproduce with AI Assistant in my setup. I’d like to keep those capabilities while using JetBrains code completion.

Since Copilot already provides settings to disable its completion features independently, could JetBrains allow its own completion to work when those features are switched off, rather than blocking it whenever the Copilot plugin is enabled?

Is there a supported workaround for this configuration?

Thanks,
-daniel

Hi DelphyM

Thanks for the screenshots. I could reproduce this on IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2.3 with the GitHub Copilot plugin installed: the Inline settings page says JetBrains inline completion is disabled because Copilot is enabled. Without the Copilot plugin, the message is gone.

I could not test your exact setup because my Copilot was not signed in and had no Completions page. The message appeared without touching those options, so I do not expect to switch them off to change it.

I do not know of a setting that lets both work at the same time. I created IJPL-260290 as a bug report: the IDE treats Copilot as a conflicting plugin, although the two are meant to work together. You can subscribe to it and vote for it to follow the fix.

IDEA-351788 asks for support for several inline completion providers at once, and you can vote for it too.

Which Copilot plugin version are you on? You can find it under Settings | Plugins.

Hi Monica,

Thank you for your positive response and for creating a bug report based on my input. Much appreciated.

Not sure how relevant is at this stage my GH Copilot plugin version, but it is 1.20.0-261-macos-arms64.

Cheers,

-daniel
