IntelliJ IDEA 2025.1 freezing after every sleep

已回答

Since upgrading to 2025.1, I've noticed that very often, after putting the laptop in sleep and resuming, IntelliJ IDEA ends up frozen and needs a Force Quit to resume work.

Running on MacOS Sequoia 15.3.2 (24D81) on an M1 Pro MacBook Pro, but have had this happen on another laptop as well, very similar symptoms.

Plugins are different between the 2 instances so not sure what the common root cause would be except the fact that it always happens after i.e. Power Button + ESC, or allowing the laptop to enter sleep.

Any help in solving this promptly would be appreciated!

Hello,

To check what specific code triggers a problem, please collect the IDE logs via Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data, and upload it at https://uploads.jetbrains.com/ (please share an UploadID here)

Check SUPPORT-A-65 for common solutions.

Hello,

Uploaded the logs and diagnostic data:

Unfortunately, the logs does not contain all the relevant information. Can you please collect it once more, with the following addition:

1. Put  laptop to sleep and notice the time on your system clock

2. Wait for 1-2 minutes and reproduce the issue (try to wake up the IDE)

3. Force quit and notice the time on your system clock

4. Collect the logs (`Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data...`) and share the upload ID and the time noticed

I'm seeing this too. When I go to PyCharm after sleeping the PC, it's just a big grey screen, and the only way to kill it is via task manager.

Is there a YouTrack issue for this?

0

At the moment, we have not enough data to make a YouTrack issue, as we cannot reproduce it and collect the data.

The generic issue is https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/articles/SUPPORT-A-65

Please collect the following logs so we can investigate the issue:

1. Go to Sleep

2. Wait for 1-2 minutes and reproduce the issue (try to wake up the IDE)

3. Force quit and notice the time on your system clock

4. Collect the logs (`Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data...`) and share the upload ID and the time noticed

To those affected: please try a workaround: disable Metal Rendering  (add `-Dsun.java2d.metal=false` in "Help | Edit Custom VM Options" and restart the IDE) and let us know if it helped.

+1 becomes not responsible after sleep, both for IDEA and PyCharm.

I believe this Youtrack issue might be tracking the same problem:

https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/JBR-8637

I'm able to 100% reproduce this when locking macbook to sleep. And it seems that adding `-Dsun.java2d.metal=false` helps resolve the issue.

To those affected:

If disabling Metal Rendering ( add `-Dsun.java2d.metal=false` in "Help | Edit Custom VM Options" and restart the IDE) solves the issue for you, it means you faced JBR-8637 . Please upvote to follow the updates.

If disabling Metal Rendering does not solve the problem, let us know, it means there is a different issue.

It froze again and I've uploaded logs (2025_04_24_Nh7Y4eWcY8DTEDygbWH5Tt). JBR-8637 seems like the better place to discuss this, no?

JBR-8637 seems like the better place to discuss this, no?

It depends on whether you can reproduce the issue with Metal Rendering disabled. If yes, then it's not JBR-8637

Is the metal option is for macOS only? I'm on Windows. So if that issue is strictly for macOS, then I guess there's two new issues that both showed up in 2025.1 with the exact same effect, but entirely different causes for mac and Windows.

@David Gilbertson

I created a new issue IJPL-185542

There are also no freezes in logs. Please add your comment to IJPL-185542 with the following information:

1. Go to Sleep

2. Wait for 1-2 minutes and reproduce the issue (try to wake up the IDE)

3. Force quit and notice the time on your system clock

4. Collect the logs (`Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data...`) and share the upload ID and the time noticed

If you will notice java_error.* file in your home folder, please send that as well

IDE seems to freeze a lot
and its random

@Eladb, this issue has not been reproduced on our side yet. To investigate further, we must have more data from the users who can reproduce it. Please share your logs (`Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data...`), upload to https://uploads.jetbrains.com/ and share Upload ID

FWIW it hasn't happened for days for me. The only thing I can think I'm doing differently is that before I probably had a Python script left running (this file), whereas now I don't.

Why your releases are so crappy these last 2 years? every new version is really bad, u fix everything at the end and the next one is starting all over again.  We pay for this features and it slow down us in our daily jobs.

1

@Matias, thank you for sharing your feedback. I'm sorry to hear that you've been experiencing issues with recent versions. We strive to improve with every release, but we understand that sometimes things may not work as expected. Could you please provide more details about the specific problems you're facing? This will help us better understand your concerns and work towards a solution.

I am experiencing this issue on 2024.2.4 and I believe I also experienced this issue on 2022.1.2, however it's been a while since I've used 2022. I have experienced this on windows 10 and now my laptop got upgraded to windows 11 I still experience the issue.

The issue occurs like clock work for me, every Friday evening I put my computer to sleep. The only applications I have open are Google chrome, and a single IntelliJ project (previously I thought having other applications open might be causing it), I even turn off Bluetooth, and the keyboard backlight to try and minimise as many other things consuming power. On Monday morning I open my laptop click on the minimised IntelliJ window. Initially you can see the open files and windows within the project, however when you click in a file window to type nothing happens, if you hover other any clickable icons in any of the menus, they don't get highlighted like they should. The only two buttons that seem to be responsive are the close and minimise buttons. Then the windows blue loading circle starts, and at the top of the window where the minimise button is, it has the project name along side the currently selected file name, and says not responding. If you keep clicking the mouse the window eventually just becomes greyed out with the windows blue loading circle. You are still able to minimise the application. It slows down the entire computer while in this state.

This seems to only happen for me when the computer is in sleep over a weekend, when the computer is in sleep over night it seems to work perfectly fine the following day. I haven't been able to recover it from the frozen state yet, and have resulted in having to force quit from task manager. It's quite annoying because everytime I close IntelliJ I lose my gitlab duo conversation history. So it means having to start all over again.

When I force quit and reopen it works as expected.

Same issue on latest PyCharm 2025 with an M3 Air.

Same issue on PyCharm 2025.1.1 on M4 Mac Studio. Click within the app doesn't do anything but clicking pycharm in the jetbrains toolbox makes it respond again after a few seconds.

If this helps with the investigation: when IntelliJ gets stuck, I’ve noticed it still seems to be able to do something. For example:

  • Right-clicking appears to attempt to open a context menu — I can see the borders, but nothing else.
  • If I try to select a block of text and drag it, I can see a border around the selected area. The larger the selection, the bigger the rectangle. However, in the UI, nothing else changes — the text doesn’t appear selected or moved.

On one occasion, I let my MacBook lock itself while IntelliJ was frozen. After unlocking it an hour later, IntelliJ was no longer frozen

Same here with PHPStorm…

After every sleep I have to kill PhpStorm and restart it again. Very tedious, as I usually have 4 to 5 projects open at the same time and every morning I have to kill the IDE, restart and wait for those 4/5 projects to index…

The same problem is happening here. What Matias mentioned above is exactly what I've been experiencing for the past two years. You pay for the IDE and update it, but it comes full of bugs. By the end of the year, the issues get fixed, and when you update it again, it comes with a new set of bugs. This really disrupts the daily workflow.

I have the exact same issue as described by Stefano Fibbi. And I would say it happens EVERY time the MacBook has been in Sleep mode. After waking up, IntelliJ appears to be frozen, but I am able to open a context menu (but can only see the borders of it) and other quirks like that.

Moving the application window from the second monitor to the primary monitor fixes the issue as long as it stays on that monitor. Dragging it back to the secondary monitor makes the problem come back.

Advice to others seeing this thread and looking for a temporary solution:

(If disable Metal rendering ( add `-Dsun.java2d.metal=false` in “Help | Edit Custom VM Options”) does not work).

Taking out the cable connecting the MacBook with the secondary monitor and putting it back in fixes the issue entirely (but the issue then comes back again after next Sleep mode). So after every sleep I pull out the USB-C and plug it back in.

Update:

Disabling Metal rendering seemed to fix it for me (at least for now, we'll see how it holds up).

This has been happening to me with PhpStorm 2025.1.0.1 running on 2023 Macbook Pro M3 macOS 15.4.1
