Flatpak? why not?

I want to try this commerically for my company, I don't/won't install deb's or other tarball'ed programs- there is zero cleanup on uninstall and it consistantly leaves a mess in my system, regardless of sudo apt purge. I also don't want to install 3rd party flatpaks with access rights to my full filesystem. Come on it's 2025 get the webstorm into a flatpak format.

UPDATE:
Actually I will not be installing this, it is already trying to phone home i have not even accepted the terms yet- this is very intrusive and will take code and telemety to new highs from your privacy policy;
CRITICAL ISSUES - Code & Data Collection

1. Broad Data Collection for "Product Development"

"We may use collected data to develop and test products and services"

Problem: This vague language could justify using your code/projects for AI training or product enhancement without explicit consent.

2. Anonymous Data Collection with Consent Bypass

"With your consent, we may collect anonymous data based on your use of JetBrains Products... Since the data is anonymous, no personal data is processed."

Red Flag: They claim anonymized data isn't personal data, but:

  • Code patterns can be fingerprinted
  • Anonymous doesn't mean non-identifiable
  • No clear limits on what constitutes "usage data"

3. AI Data Processing (Buried Reference)

"If you are using JetBrains AI, we or our LLM providers may collect personal data related to your AI service usage"

Major Concern:

  • Refers to separate AI policy (not included)
  • Your code could be sent to third-party LLM providers
  • No clear opt-out mechanism

🔍 VAGUE & PROBLEMATIC CLAUSES

4. Overly Broad "Legitimate Interest" Claims

"The legal basis for this data processing is our legitimate interest in promoting and marketing our products and services"

Issue: "Legitimate interest" is used to justify extensive data collection without requiring consent.

5. Issue Reports Contain Sensitive Data

"Data in issue reports pertaining to JetBrains Products and services, such as project or device names"

Problem: Bug reports often contain:

  • Code snippets
  • File paths revealing project structure
  • Proprietary information

6. Third-Party Data Sharing

"We may share your Personal Data with certain third parties... if such sharing is necessary to achieve the purposes defined in section Why We Collect Data"

Red Flag: Extremely broad - could justify sharing with anyone if it serves their business purposes.

⚠️ ENFORCEMENT & DELETION CONCERNS

7. Data Retention Loopholes

"We may also have copies of your information in application logs, weblogs, and/or backups... These backups will not be accessible as separately delineated information"

Problem: Even after requesting deletion, your data remains in "backups" indefinitely.

8. Cross-Context Behavioral Advertising

"These advertising partners may use this information... to deliver personalized advertisements to you when you visit digital properties within their networks

Hi Erik,

Here are some useful clarifications:
• Usage statistics / telemetry: IntelliJ (and other JetBrains IDEs) doesn’t collect usage stats without your consent. You can turn it off at any time under Settings > Appearance & Behavior > System Settings > Data Sharing by unchecking “Send usage statistics.”
• AI / code content: JetBrains AI is opt-in and can be disabled entirely (Plugin settings > disable JetBrains AI Assistant). If your company needs AI, there’s JetBrains AI Enterprise: you can route requests to your own/on-prem models or your own cloud keys, with org-level controls (SSO/SCIM, allow/deny).
• Offline / “phoning home”: You can run the IDE fully offline (including offline license activation), which also prevents update checks and online lookups.
• Flatpak: JetBrains doesn’t officially maintain them today; please vote and star this ticket to track it: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IJPL-35265.
