Somehow this preference got reset and I cannot find it in Settings. That is - to choose to put an asterisk on any file tab where the file has been modified. Thank you.
When Mark modified tab is enabled, at the moment you modify any line and then set focus on another application window (Alt+TAB), the Mark modified dot is missing from the original tab.
Is this either a bug, or is intentionally behaviour?.
The IDE is probably auto-saving the file for you when you Alt-Tab.
Double-check what you have at “Settings/Preferences | Appearance & Behavior | System Settings | Save files when switching to a different application or a built-in terminal”
Another possibility: you may also have a File Watcher that runs on that file…
Hi there,
Search box is Settings/Preferences is very helpful in such cases -- try it.
Settings/Preferences | Editor | General | Editor Tabs
It is still in the same place in 2020.2.3, but the setting is now called "Mark modified (*)".
PhpStorm 2025.3.2

EXCELLENT. Solved.
Always thinking for many years ago it was a not solved bug…
