Please provide this .md file and your log folder zipped (for that, go to the menu Help and select Compress logs and show in <your file manager>).

Please try disabling gfm(https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/7701-gfm) plugin - it seems to be responsible for the issue

I uninstalled the gfm plugin, and I opened the markdown file and did not hang!
However, it was very slow.
When I changed the plugin to "Markdown Navigator", the operation got faster.

For me it hangs with JetBrains Markdown plugin (gfm was not installed). Markdown Navigator plugin works fine though...
Would it be possible to share the specific .MD file that causes the hang-up?

Qrilka, please submit a support ticket attaching the logs bundle (Help | Compress Logs and Show in…), it's hard to say anything specific without it.

So Markdown files are completely freezing php-storm for me. I had this issue the other day.. i disabled the markdown plugin.
I wanted to edit a MD file today.. i re-enabled it to try again.. it froze phpstorm. I force-quite trough task manger (win 10)
HOWEVER.. it was the only file open at the time.... so then when I launched phpstorm.. it immediately was freezes on 'Re-opening files...'
I couldnt work! Tried to manually delete the .md file so it couldnt open it... it still froze on startup.
Luckily i deleting the .workspace.xml from the .idea folder allowed the app to start.. but now my workspace is hosed.
Can you share your logs via Help > **Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data** with us?

We're currently investigating this issue at https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-247244 - feel free to share your logs & there. As I can see there's no workaround available currently.
I have the same problem, to edit my MD file I had to disable markdown plugin first and use other editor to see the changes :(
Yea, I have the save issue, when I disable markdown plugin, Webstorm works fine (but without markdown preview of course).
Using IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate 2020.2, can't open any .md file, not even empty: double clicking on them doesn't do anything.
Disabling the Markdown plugin (bundled 202.6397.94) allows me to open them but no preview.
We would need to check the generated logs. If possible, please submit them in a new bug report at https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/newIssue or via Help | Contact Support.
Same issue for me - WebStorm on Windows - any *.md file would hang the IDE if Markdown plugin is enabled.
It is hard to say anything for sure without checking logs first.
Would it be possible to collect these and submit a YT issue or contact the support team?
