Intellij is setting my (NEW) project root to my user directory

I've created a standard new, maven, project and the project directory is set to my user directory.

It then indexes the whole user directory which takes FOREVER.

I had my friend test my exact steps but on their system it worked fine.

I then had them email me the created project and I opened it on my laptop and it ran into the same issue.

Somethings very wrong with my intellij...
