Goto definition/declaration on split screen/panes

Go to declaration opens the document in the current pane, instead of the already opened fie in another pane. 

This works as expected when I have tabs visible, but when I hide tabs (my ideal configuration), the functionality changes to the above behavior. 

Is there a way to fix this? A setting perhaps?
