Exclude node_modules from open file dialog

When I hit Cmd+Shift+O to open the Open File dialog, I often get node_modules items matching before the ones in my project files.  Node_modules appears to already be marked as excluded, as it only gives me the option to mark it as "Not excluded." Is there any other way to exclude it without complicating my workflow?
