Turns out it can be turned off in 'Languages and Frameworks > Play2' on the Other tab. There's a set of gutter icon controls at the bottom.

Seems like it now recognizes sqlu but it doesn't understand the other special characters like #.  Example:  val query = sqlu"ALTER SEQUENCE medication_orders_id_seq RESTART WITH #${id + 1};")
