You need IDEA Ultimate or profile via profiler UI as described in the document for IDEA Community Edition.

The best option would be to use a profiler. Consider a paid one if it's really important for the project.

Does it work in other Java Swing applications such as JEdit or NetBeans?Try running JDK 1.8 build from http://download.jetbrains.com/idea/ideaIU-14.1.4-custom-jdk-bundled.dmg and see if it works.
