+1 on opening plain Completion-API as welland provide some hooks to "add" CompletionVariants to already existing Languages/FileTypes

That would be a possibility, yes.But my favourite approach would be 2 business objects as I might add more differences in behaviour and/or property types.

simply add ?*.xml.ft to the resource patterns in Settings->Compiler
