Basically this control is for informative purposes only and you gain absolutely nothing and even lose some performance by executing manual GC because it will collect some internal caches.

I repeat: unless you experience OutOfMemory Exceptions you should never pay attention to heap size indicator.

We use our products with Mountain Lion 10.8 back here at jetbrains with no problems.OS will prompt you for installing JDK on first run of any java app - be sure to let if do that and finish.
