Does your error occur if you switch from the clang compiler to gcc? Could you reproduce the error on small sample projects? If yes, you can attach the project and we will look at it.

No, it's only possible using properties. But why do you use instance vars instead of properties?BTW, you can convert your ivars to the properties using the Refactor | Convert to properties action.
