I think the check IDEA does to see if a font is monospaced may trigger the problem.

You're saying you can select an editor font in the "Colors and Fonts" settings that is not a monospaced font? Strange, but the font list and selection system is a little different in those two dial...

It is clearly a jvm and font problem, not an IDEA problem and it happens to very few people. The gsfonts-x11 package for example is known to cause this issue. See:http://www.intellij.net/forums/thr...
