Elena, the opening five words in my original post say that I'm using Webstorm 2020.4. My followup post answers your other questions.

For anyone else who stumbles into this. It's not possible to remove the Markdown plugin as it's bundled. I had to disable the plugin. This caused the application to freeze, and I had to Force Quit ...
