Using make, this is definitely an issue in IDEA, and I believe there's an SCR filed with one of you guys saying it's a jikes bug.

Hm, whenever javac dies surely it sends something to System.out or System.err?

Ouch, yeah that sucks.There are two issues though, with javac dying, there should be some output...hopefully! all that is shown is 'compiler internal error'
