ugh..for some reason it starts flickering again after an indeterminable period of time. I tried restarting a few times and it always starts up fine, no flickering...then a few minutes the flickerin...

If you are teaching maybe you should check out http://www.bluej.org/. It doesnt compare to IDEA in any way, other than it seems geared for teaching.

I think its obvious anything broken between the Aurora Release and Pallada's first two builds you can safely wager will be fixed again at some point.

Eclipse has had AspectJ support for I don't know how long, but quite a while. So IDEA would not be the first.
