FYI It also works ok if I step through with the debugger, even the the console option checked. Maybe some kind of race condition?

Ah, found it in the menu: Shift-Delete. I had thought my emacs key mappings (ctrl-d or ctrl-w) would work, but a quick keymap change was all that was needed.
