Basically, there are not so many features that you may disable apart from some built-in plugins.The update itself should not increase RAM usage dramatically, so looks like, something is wrong here ...

You may create a custom scope and then assign a color to it in "Settings/Preferences | Appearance & Behavior | File Colors": Hope it helps.

Please check if you have the "IntelliJ New UI" plugin enabled. If it is here, disabling it should do the trick and return to an old UI.
