Well this is awkward - I changed nothing, just restarted intellij, and now all works.  Very strange... but glad that seems to have resolved the issue.

3. Find windows (ctrl+f and shift+ctrl+f) do not close when I hit Escape

From what I can tell, it looks like I have the right keymappings set.  I also don't see any exceptions in my logs unfortunately.
