PyCharm upgrade 2017.3 can't open existing project

Answered

I just upgraded to PyCharm 2017.3 (on a Raspberry Pi running Linux).

I can't get this upgrade to open an existing project.

I see the Pycharm nav bar, and some progress messages:

Loading components, loading project, Scanning files to index

then it hangs - no response in PyCharm, can't even close it.

I also get a message "IDE's Java runtime (1.8u65) which may cause instability.  update to version 1.8.0u144 or higher.

Sorry for my low level of expertise, but I don't know how to update IDE's Java Runtime, nor do I know if that is a factor.

thanks for any help!

Hi Danbarstow! Could you please create a ticket in our bug tracker and attach zipped log folder from Help | Show Log in ...?

Thanks for your attention to this.  I'll try to do this in bug-tracker.

I can create a new project, but I can't open my existing project.  I have a slew of log-in files from my attempts over the past few days.  Let me know if you want others.

Have you tried to update your JDK? If it doesn't help please attach log files (https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/articles/207241085-Locating-IDE-log-files) to this issue: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/PY-27494

I found a post in the Raspberry Forum that shows how to install Java 8 on Raspbian (https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=101543).

I have the latest Java version 1.8.0_161 and PyCharm 2017.3.3 can run without any problem!
