I have IDEA configured for a manual proxy server, which works just fine (e.g., I can download plugins).I am running IDEA 14 CE under Mac OS X 10.10.3.

I am at a loss as what to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You may need to configure IDEA to use your system Maven in Preferences and make sure Maven settings.xml is configured for your proxy server: https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/help/configuring-http-proxy.html .

If it still doesn't work, please submit a support ticket with idea.log (https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/entries/23352446) at https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/home/ .
