EAP license scheme changed?

Oh that would be brilliant since I am in a similar situation. They are complaining about Eclipse and when I show them these little things that I can do in Intellij they get real impressed but the main thing that holds them back is that its not free so they are willing to put up with the headaches unfortunately.

The only change is that you no longer have to download the license key separately.
Just grab an EAP build, and it will run for 30 days for free.

Way back in the old IntelliJ days I remember to have used the EAP with
a temp license that could be downloaded for free. It outdated now and
then but a new one could be downloaded as long as the EAP period
lasted.

Has this policy changed in the mean time?

I personally have a 7.0 license so I can happily develop with
EAP-pleasure. But my fellow developers are strugeling with flaky
eclipse's that do not seem to be able to cope with the size of our
project. I am luring them over to IntelliJ and a license scheme as
indicated above would help to get them addicted ;)

Of course, you have to buy a license in order to use the release build for
longer 30 days. There's usually a pause of no EAPs about 3 months after the
production release.

Ok, so I correctly interpreted the info on that ;)

I see people are held back because they have this roadblock after 30 days. They hesitate because they are not eager to invest in learning new shortcuts and practices if the road ahead is blocked. Specially in bigger firms where purchasing is slow. You spend a few weeks getting used to a new IDE, then you are hooked and convince your manager that it is a wise investment. Then it takes 4-8 weeks for the order to snail over all the desks. During this process you will hit the roadblock and you are thrown back to eclipse or whatever. I see people around me that will not even start this process and stay with what they have.

Of course I can also see the business side that giving free licenses will not help to pay the people doing the great work at JetBrains. On the other hand, having realy involved beta testers in combination with an EAP silence period could be a good reason to give out continuous EAP licenses.


....but I remember that in the old days EAP license keys could continuously be downloaded while the EAP was running. Is my memory bad or was this the case?

Anyway, I payed for my license with a smile, I have invested bigger amounts for smaller returns ;)

No, you didn't. :) The 30 day period restarts when you install every new
EAP build. So you can stay on EAPs as long as the EAP cycle runs.

G-R-E-A-T, glad I misunderstood that one ;) and that is even a better scheme then my rusty mind remembers, no more downloading of keys...

With even more stamina I will continue evangelising IntelliJ!
