8280 Fails to start

I restarted my WinXP Pc after installing some upgrades, and when I tried to run IDEA, I got two (identical) error messages in succession box while the splash screen was visible. Once I OK'd the errors, the splash screen went away, but IDEA never appeared. The process is idling in the background.

This has happened before, and I had to reinstall IDEA to get it to work. 8280 seems too flaky - especially as I'm only editing Java & XML/XSL files. I'm seriously considering reverting to version 7...
