ok but in version 6 there was a changes view (without the committed or incoming tabs) and the check file status option was there as well.
Sometimes I would alter a file and then remove my alterations. The file would remain blue (indicating a change). I would then do a check file status to either remind me of other changes I had made and forgotten about, or to kick the file back to an unchanged state (i.e. change it black).
I know I can do things like compare against repository but I quite liked that option....

That's right. You could also use "check file status" to see if the file was modified on server after you updated. Now the committed tab and thje outdated version notification bar provides this functionality.

You can use the "Refresh file statuses" action in the Version Control menu (or Refresh in Changes view) for this purpose in the current version.

The only problem with this is that Selena still isn't picking up external changes immediately. Therefore, to pick up either a content change or a Subversion status change to a single file, you're forced to refresh the status of the entire project which in our case takes about 2 minutes.

Starting with next EAP build, you'll be able to use the "Synchronize" action on a single file to refresh its status.

Indeed, check file/directory/project status has been removed for Subversion.
Changes view covers the same functionality and provides a better UI.
