Are Selena project files backwards compatible with Demetra? That is, can I open a Demetra project in Selena and if I decide I'm not ready for Selena, go back to Demetra without mucking up my project?

As already mentioned, some of the features are not backwards compatible. You should create copies of the .ipr, .iws and .iml files.

If I just open an IJ6 project and modify module locations, add modules and change dependencies, is backward compatibility still going to be broken?

Since the project file is completely rewritten on every save, the compatibility depends not on what project configuration UI you use, but rather on what module types and module configuration features (GWT, JSF etc.) the project uses.

Thanks. It seems we'll be all right as we don't use GWT or JSF, just J2EE modules and Java modules, which we don't auto deploy.
Hello Gordon,
Currently it's the same as Demetra: you can use JDK 6 if you'd like to but
the officially supported configuration is JDK 1.5.0_10.

And this is a very good thing IMHO :) .
AFAIK those who want a JRE can use the *.exe distribution.
Ahmed.
