Linux/Windowmanager/Focus issues

I know the focus-issues under linux are a known problem (at least there
are plenty unresolved issues in Jira) but I'm curious what other have
done to work around them.
I'm using FVWM, and the main problem I have is that focus never returns
to the main window after a popup dialog has been shown. I get this
behaviour both with 4.5.4 and with the current EAP (jdk 1.4/5 doesn't
seem to matter either?)
I'm guess I'm just wondering if there are windowmanagers that somehow
allow you to mitigate this problem.

kwm (the KDE window manager -- you can use it without KDE with some work) is the most well behaved window manager I've used. For starters, it's the only one with decent options to prevent focus stealing.
